Position Overview

This is a full-time senior campaign role based in Germany, rooted at the heart of Avaaz’s global movement. The Senior Campaigner will lead campaigning, communication and advocacy efforts focused on our German and global campaigns, especially our current focus on pressuring Germany to do all it can to end the atrocities in Gaza.

This role demands exceptional strategic communication, strong political and civil society networks, and expertise in Germany’s media landscape.

You will be an integral part of a high-impact global campaign team, reporting directly to our Senior Campaign Director, collaborating on creative messaging, public engagements, and multi-platform strategies to create political impact, influence public discourse, and drive change.

Responsibilities

  • Design and lead impactful campaign strategies: Develop clear theories of change, sharp messaging,and emotionally compelling narratives that mobilize German audiences to amplify our campaigns on Gaza.
  • Drive advocacy with German decision makers: Build and maintain strong relationships with parliamentarians, government officials, political parties, and opinion leaders to influence policy and public discourse.
  • Engage and expand civil society coalitions: Partner with NGOs, grassroots groups, faith networks, unions, and professional associations to strengthen collective impact and amplify campaigns.
  • Mobilize and inspire German public support: Create innovative, high-engagement campaigns and narrative-shaping initiatives that connect a German audience to global justice issues.
  • Monitor political and social developments: Track German and EU debates, policies, and cultural moments to seize campaign opportunities and ensure Avaaz’s work is timely, relevant, and strategically effective.
  • Design and implement bold, media-driven campaign strategies tailored to German media, political context, and civil society audiences, centred on our Gaza efforts. Cultivate relationships with German and international journalists, media outlets, and influencers.
  • Develop powerful messaging assets: draft press releases, op-eds, spokesperson talking points, social media content, event speeches, and multimedia materials (e.g. video, audio, visuals).
  • Proactively monitor news and political developments to identify strategic moments to amplify campaign messaging, such as high-profile visits, legislative debates, or cultural events.
  • Organize high-visibility stunts or in-person events connected to campaigns, e.g. coordinating media moments, managing logistics, and ensuring alignment with messaging.
  • Act as spokesperson for national campaigning, if necessary, ensuring consistent and effective representation to German-speaking audiences.
  • Collaborate internally with our global Campaign, Media and Digital Content teams, aligning messaging and strategy across time zones and regions.

Skills & Qualities for Success

  • Proven track record in political campaigning, media advocacy, or strategic communications in Germany or European contexts.
  • Deep connections with German political actors (e.g. Bundestag, party offices, parliamentary groups), media (print, broadcast, digital), and civil society organizations.
  • Compelling storytelling and framing skills, ability to translate complex context into emotionally resonant, actionable narratives.
  • Exceptional media pitching and spokesperson abilities, demonstrating prior success engaging German media.
  • Strong network-building skills, with experience facilitating coalitions, partnerships, or cross-sector collaborations.
  • Event coordination experience; familiarity with organizing impactful visits or tours such as our Gaza Doctors European Tour (media logistics, messaging, stakeholder engagement).
  • Analytical and data-driven communication abilities, with the capacity to monitor campaign metrics and optimize media strategy.
  • Focused and impact-oriented mindset, able to effectively work in a fast-paced, high-impact campaigning environment, managing shifting priorities and urgent deadlines.
  • High professionalism and delivery orientation, with proven ability to deliver high-quality work at speed, balancing accuracy, clarity, and impact under intense pressure or periods.
  • Sustaining performance through effective stress and workload management, to maintain high performance and personal wellbeing.
  • Strong collaboration skills across teams to deliver rapid, impactful campaigns while upholding Avaaz’s values and mission.
  • Fluency in German and English, both written and verbal. Additional languages are a plus.
  • Passion for global justice, experience engaging responsibly with emotionally challenging global justice issues and imagery, demonstrating compassion and professionalism.
  • Proficiency in digital collaboration tools (Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, media databases).

Location 

Avaaz is a virtual organization and most of our work is done online. Our staff are based in cities all over the world. For this role, we are seeking candidates who reside in Germany, preferably Berlin, but other cities and countries in the EMEA time zone will be considered, if the candidate is the best fit.

Avaaz will support you to set up a home or co-working environment that leads to excellence in delivery and long-term sustainability. 

Compensation and Benefits

The full-package salary for this position in Germany ranges from 73.000 - 79.000 EUR.  

For successful candidates based outside of Germany, the final pay will be adjusted based on location and relevant experience. An accurate range in local currency will be provided to candidates during the screening process.
