About Avaaz

Avaaz is an international campaigning and advocacy organisation that provides its global membership of almost 70 million people with opportunities to make our world a better place. We’re one of the world’s largest online global campaigning movements, with people from every corner in the world taking action to close the gap between the world we have and the world most people everywhere want.  This includes protecting human rights worldwide, supporting indigenous struggles, saving our planet from climate change and other threats, and fighting to stop disinformation and other cyber threats from undermining our democracies.

Our model enables people to channel their voices into a powerful collective force at tipping point moments to impact the pressing global challenges of our time, from climate and ecological collapse to human rights abuses and the dismantling of democracy. Avaaz is funded through small donations from individual Avaaz members, no big money from governments or corporations. This keeps us independent and allows us to keep a laser focus on doing what the world needs.

Language Associate (Dutch) - Part-Time Position Overview

This is an exciting consultant position that offers a unique opportunity to support large-scale social change efforts. Language Associates bring Avaaz to millions of people each week by translating Avaaz campaigns from English into key languages and rewriting them to be fitting to local contexts. The role requires very strong written communication skills that allow you to capture the heart of Avaaz’ campaigns and powerfully translate them into your language.

The successful candidate for this part-time position (10-20 hours/week) will work closely with the Dutch language lead and with the Member Engagement and Community Petitions teams, and they will report to an Avaaz staffer.

Responsibilities

  • Translate Avaaz campaigns from English to Dutch, turning them into strong, emotive, and compelling campaigns targetting The Netherlands and Belgium.
  • Translate and edit relevant materials for our website - using backend interface to set everything up technically. (training will be provided)
  • Looking for sources for campaigns -- finding relevant, issue-specific, supporting materials from the press, NGOs, etc.
  • Monitor the Dutch Avaaz website for functionality and language errors: typos, grammatical errors, etc.
  • Support the Dutch campaign team to write and edit excellent campaign materials such as briefings, advocacy letters, and press releases.
  • Reviewing, managing, and supporting the petitions published by Dutch members on the Avaaz Community Petitions website.
  • Contribute to campaign development, including drafting and testing.

Qualifications

  • Excellent written and oral communication, and translation skills in Dutch.
  • Deep understanding of regional differences (e.g. the Netherlands and Belgium), to guarantee Avaaz content can be understood across Dutch-speaking regions.
  • Excellent communication skills in English, the Avaaz team’s working language.
  • Professionalism, efficiency, and results-oriented delivery on short timelines.
  • Passion and commitment to global justice, citizen empowerment, and social change.
  • Strong teamwork skills, comfortable in a highly collaborative culture, and a hierarchical team structure.
  • Creativity for campaign tactics and strategies.
  • Proficient in Google Suite and online communication systems (Slack, Zoom, etc).
