Position Overview

Avaaz is growing! Avaaz is at the forefront of global anti-disinformation efforts to protect the world’s democracies from the amplification and acceleration of disinformation, hate, and extremism, and other harmful content by social media platforms. After a pilot project in Brazil, we launched an effort to protect European elections with an operation powered by big data, investigative journalism, and the strength of our network of members in the EU. 

In 2020, Avaaz again mobilized teams of researchers and advocates to defend the presidential election in the US, reveal how platform policies allowed misinformation about COVID-19 and other public health issues to reach millions, and push for smart, rights-based solutions.

Avaaz is now ramping up its work on disinformation, tech accountability, and regulation in the US. The Advocacy Consultant role is an exciting position at the heart of one of the most innovative and promising projects in the disinfo sphere. It offers a unique platform from which to develop and pursue large-scale social change efforts.

As an Advocacy Consultant, you will be responsible for assisting Avaaz in our efforts to connect with Members of Congress and officials in the Biden Administration; helping to develop and deliver strategic communications to partners and stakeholders; and contributing to the design and execution of strategies for legislative and regulatory advocacy. This role will report to an Avaaz staffer.

This is a consultancy, and is not intended to lead to full-time employment.


- Directly engage with government, private, and public sector targets to expand U.S. outreach capacity;
- Help develop impactful outreach strategies and campaigns;
- Develop compelling advocacy and outreach materials;
- Act as a crucial node between Avaaz staff and external actors;
- Conduct advocacy and relationship building with government officials, partner organizations, and civil society after alignment on key goals and targets with team points and managers;
- Monitor events and identifying opportunities for strong campaigns and moments to use advocacy to advance campaigns;

Preferred Experience and Knowledge

This is a demanding role that requires remarkable talent in a wide range of areas. The ideal candidate will have a good cross-section of the following qualifications:

- University degree;
- A minimum of 3 years experience with government relations or policy advocacy advocacy in the United States;
- Knowledge of US legislative and regulatory landscape with respect to tech accountability, social media, and disinformation;
- Experience working with civil society; and,
- High-level understanding of social media platforms.

This position is remote and should be based in the United States, ideally in Washington DC. Avaaz is a global virtual organization, with most of our work done over email, telephone, and Skype. 

Compensation and Benefits 

Salary varies with location and experience, and is highly competitive with leading international nongovernmental organizations. Specific benefits also range with location, but all include 5 weeks paid vacation per year, 10 paid holidays, phone and home internet reimbursement, out-of-home office/co-working reimbursement, and professional development funds.
